Note to moderator

Dear Moderator,

My brief for my AS Media was to create a Front Cover, Contents Page and Double Page Spread for a new music magazine. I chose to do my music magazine with no particular genre in mind this was to allow me to reach the largest audience possible. However I was mainly advertising to a male audience 16 - 20.

I have used labels on my blog to make it easier for you to find what you are looking for.

Yours Sincerely,
Harry Jones, Edgbarrow School.

Question 4 & 5

Who are my Target Audience and how did I appeal to them?

For my music magazine I attempted to target young mean aged 16 - 20 here is how I did it.

The types of artists that appeared
One way in which I appeal to my target audience is through the artists that I feature within my music music magazine because they are from the genres and are the favourite artists of my target audience that I found when I researched into my target audience using a questionnaire.

Using Online tools
Since I am planning to sell my magazine online as well as physically I think it would be important to have a large online presence especially on social media because my target audience are known to use social media a lot. Therefore, this might be the most ideal place for me to advertise my magazine.

Front Cover

My front cover appeals to my target audience because the names are of the artists that appeal to them and they are represented on the front cover with the image of the artists therefore the front cover may appeal to them more.

Contents Page

For my contents page I attempted to appeal to my audience with a mature look and layout. I did this so that the magazine does not feel patronising and so they do not dislike it due to it being too childish for them. However, I chose to still have my magazine be colourful so that it stands out more drawing attention to it.

Double Page Spread
When it came to designing my double page spread I tried to keep professional, sleek and mature so that my audience is not turned off by it. I did this by keeping the colours limited and very basic. I also used more complex language for this more mature audience rather than the simpler language I may have used if it was for a younger audience like 8 – 11 year olds.

Double Page Spread final draft

For this final draft I changed the colour of the start letter and the quotation marks to purple this is to keep the house style and colour scheme the same throughout the three pages.

Contents Page Final Draft

After corrections and final checks this is the final design I have come up with for the
contents page. I have chosen to stick with white to make it more sleek and professional.
It also allows for the pictures to stand out more on their own drawing more attention to
them.

Front Page final draft

After a lot of experimentation I decided to have a light blue/grey background as it stands
out while not being overwhelming. It also contrasts well with the other colours present.
While it does not make it pop as much as the bronze/orange version it does fit better
with the other pages and creates a more overall cohesive house style.

Front cover fourth draft

After the orange didn't work with the rest of the pages I wanted to explore other colours
that I could possibly use. While this grey works really well it seems very dull and boring
however it would work with the other pages.

Contents draft third draft

For this draft of my contents page I experimented with having a chrome silver background
overall I think it looks dull so I think I might just stick to a simple white background
because while it may seem more manufactured it makes the others pop due to the contrast.
I also believe that the white makes it seem more professional.

Double Page Spread - third draft

For this draft I decided to experiment with using orange on the double page spread however I don't like the look of this and therefore I have decided that I shouldn't use orange as a key colour in my colour scheme
because while it works with the front cover it does not work with the rest of the piece. I also feel that just using it on the front cover would ruin the house style I am attempting to create.

Contents page second draft

Since I liked the use of  the orange I decided to experiment how I would use the colour
within the rest of the pages so I tried using the orange in the contents page however I don't
think it works well and feels overloaded.

Double Page Spread - Second draft

In this draft I have added the quotation marks for the pull quote and I have also added a box showing that this is the key cover story. I am very satisfied with how this looks and I just need to add the text for the article.
Also I want to experiment with adding orange to this page to try and keep the house style with my plans for the front cover.

Front Cover third draft

For my third draft I made the text stand out more and I am now happy with how it looks.
I also like the new layout for the bar code and date. I have also experimented with a new
background colour while I like it because it contrasts well with the blue and gold I am
not sure if I would be able to integrate the colour within the rest of my magazine.

Double Page Spread - First Draft

This is the first draft for my double page spread I have chosen to have the artist to go over the white text box to make him stand out more.  I really like how the title and page number are laid out however the top right
corner still needs work as it is very empty. I also need to add quotation marks for the pull quote, I want to do this in a unique way rather than just be in the same font and style as the rest of the quote.

Contents page first draft

For my contents page I experimented with different designs that may want to set out the
contents and this is the format that I have gone for. I have chosen this one because it is clear
and simple to understand while still being interesting and working with the style of my front
cover.

Front cover second draft

I have added more text like the names of other artists appearing in the magazine and the
title of the main story. While I like the colour an font I used I need to work out a way to
have them stand out. Also I added some colour to the background however I am not
satisfied with this current colour and I want to look at other possible colours. I also want
to work with the bar-code and date positioning as I believe there is still too much blank
space.

Front Cover - First Draft

To start with I experimented with where I wanted to position the artist logo and other key
parts of the front cover. I finally settled on this design which I am happy with. However, the
artists name seems bland and I may want to experiment with how I can draw more attention to
it. I also want to look at filling in the top right hands corner as it is very empty.
